What you get

Four things we build for UK e-commerce

You bring the product and the brand. We bring the engineering — payment-flow-fluent, conversion-focused, and built to handle peak traffic.

  • Custom storefronts

Headless and traditional storefronts built around your brand — not a theme you fight against on every update.

  • Marketplace platforms

Multi-vendor marketplaces with vendor onboarding, commission splits, and product approval workflows.

  • Payment + checkout

Stripe, Square, and custom checkout flows that reduce abandonment and keep cardholder data out of scope at our layer.

  • Subscription commerce

Recurring revenue models with flexible billing cycles, trial management, and churn reduction tooling.

How we work

Our process

Four phases, same rhythm every engagement. Payment architecture and compliance scoped in discovery so there are no mid-build surprises.

  1. Discovery

Map your product catalogue, fulfilment flow, and compliance touchpoints. Payment architecture scoped upfront.

  2. Design

Conversion-focused wireframes, checkout prototypes, and mobile-first layouts — reviewed with your team.

  3. Build

Agile delivery with payment-flow integration testing. Stripe / Square sandbox validation, load testing, and end-to-end order flow coverage.

  4. Launch

Go-live with payment verification, DNS cutover, and a 30-day window where fixes are free while you settle in.

Compliance map

The UK e-commerce baseline

Six frameworks we design against on every e-commerce engagement — with specifics, not hand-waving.

Card handling offloaded to Stripe / Square

We never store raw card data. Card flows go through Stripe or Square hosted payment fields, so cardholder data does not transit Byte Bridges-built systems. Your SAQ A scope stays minimal — see our Controls Map for the full position on payment processing.

Consumer Rights Act 2015

Digital content, goods, and services all have different rules. We build return, refund, and cancellation flows that match what the Act actually requires — not a generic "30-day returns" banner.

UK GDPR

Lawful basis for marketing, cookie consent, data minimisation on checkout forms, and subject access request tooling — baked into the architecture, not bolted on before launch.

Distance Selling Regulations

Pre-contract information, order confirmation emails, and cooling-off period handling built into the purchase flow from day one.

Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013

Clear pricing (including VAT), delivery estimates, and cancellation rights displayed at the right points in the checkout — because that is what the regulations require.

Accessibility (WCAG 2.1 AA — working towards 2.2)

Product listings, filters, and checkout flows built to WCAG 2.1 AA, with the WCAG 2.2 success criteria in flight. Screen-reader-friendly cart, keyboard-navigable checkout, and accessible error states throughout.

Before you ask

Frequently asked questions

Shopify or custom-built — how do you decide?

Shopify is the right call for most D2C brands selling under a few hundred SKUs with standard fulfilment. If you need a multi-vendor marketplace, complex subscription logic, or a checkout flow that Shopify Liquid cannot handle, we build custom on Next.js with Stripe. We will tell you honestly in discovery which path saves you money long-term.

Which payment gateway should I use?

Stripe for most UK e-commerce — the API is excellent, fees are transparent, and your card-handling scope stays minimal because cardholder data sits with Stripe (a validated provider), not us. Square if you also have physical retail and want a single provider. PayPal as an additional option if your customers expect it. We do not push a gateway because of referral fees — we push the one that fits your business.

How do you handle VAT on the storefront?

UK VAT rules require you to show VAT-inclusive prices to consumers. We configure tax calculation at the product and checkout level, handle zero-rated and reduced-rate items properly, and generate VAT invoices. If you sell to the EU post-Brexit, we set up the OSS (One Stop Shop) threshold logic. We are not accountants — but we build the system your accountant needs.

Can you handle peak traffic — Black Friday, Christmas?

Yes. We load-test before launch, use CDN-cached product pages, and architect checkout flows to scale horizontally. Vercel or AWS with auto-scaling means you pay for baseline most of the year and burst capacity when it matters. We will give you realistic numbers in discovery — not a vague "it scales" promise.

How do you handle returns and refund compliance?

The Consumer Rights Act and Consumer Contracts Regulations set minimum standards for returns on distance sales — 14-day cooling-off, specific refund timelines, and rules about deductions for used goods. We build the return request flow, refund processing, and customer communication into the platform so you are compliant by default, not by accident.
